When I first started taking X seriously I had maybe a couple hundred followers and basically zero impressions. I was posting content, getting crickets, and wondering what I was doing wrong. Sound familiar?
The thing nobody tells you upfront is that X is not like Instagram or Facebook. You can't just post and wait. The algorithm rewards interaction — and I mean real, timely interaction. The kind that puts you in front of people who aren't already following you.
It took me a while to figure that out.
The Strategy That Actually Changed Everything
Here's the thing that genuinely moved the needle for me — and I'm giving this away for free because I think creators should help each other out.
Find the big accounts in your niche and reply early.
I'm talking accounts with a million plus impressions, people who post consistently and get massive engagement. Follow them. Turn on notifications if you have to. And the moment they post something — be in those replies fast, with something that actually adds to the conversation.
Not just "love this!" or an emoji. Something that makes people stop and look at your profile.
I dropped one reply on a viral thread — the right image, the right comment, the right timing — and pulled over 2,500 impressions from that single reply. One reply. That's when it clicked for me.
The key is the image has to fit the moment. Funny thread? Match the energy. Something relatable? Be relatable. The contrast between your comment and your photo is what makes people curious enough to click your profile.
Once I started doing this consistently my impressions started climbing. I'm sitting at 130K+ now and still building toward the monetization threshold. It works — you just have to be patient and consistent.
The Promo Account Mistake
Okay here's where I get a little honest about something embarrassing.
At some point I decided I wanted to speed things up and paid for a promo account to retweet my content and get me in front of new audiences. Sounds reasonable right? Pay a little, get some exposure, grow faster.
What actually happened was... not that.
The account took two days just to get started. Their website was confusing and misleading about what you actually got. I had to send them my own post link because they couldn't find it themselves. And after all that the "promotion" was barely noticeable. I filed a dispute on the charge.
I was frustrated — not just because of the money but because of the principle of it. Creators are out here working hard and there are accounts that will happily take your money and deliver almost nothing.
Finding Something That Actually Works
After that experience I started paying more attention to how promotion should work. What would actually help a creator? What would I want if I was looking for exposure?
